The aviator jacket has landed

The aviator jacket is this season's statement piece - it will define A/W 2010 in the fashion history books.

Lipsy aviator

You know this already however - how can you have missed the pages and pages the fashion press have dedicated to swooning over shearling stunners by such designers as Burberry Prorsum, Phillip Lim and Mulberry?

But why all the attention? And how exactly should we wear such a statement style?

Continuing the trend for tough, masculine outerwear looks - remember the parka and the military coat? - the aviator is an empowering piece. It was, after all, made famous by Amelia Earhart, the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and one of the most inspiring women in history.

So, rather than a 'throw it on top of your outfit' item, the flying jacket is really the star of the show - we're imagining owners finding excuses to spend more time outdoors ("I'm just taking the jacket for a walk") and strutting with added attitude.

How to wear the trend

As the aviator jacket is made from tough, thick materials such as leather and sheepskin, be sure to keep your shapes simple and tight.

Pair with mini-skirts, bodycon dresses, high-waisted trousers and crisp blouses. And pull your hair away from your face to ensure that the oversized collar can be admired in all its glory.

For a directional take on the trend, contrast the hard with the soft: wear your aviator jacket with a feminine lace piece, or sensual fabrics such as silk or chiffon.

Or resurrect Nineties grunge - an important look this season - with an oversized jumper and skinnies.

However you plan to wear it, make sure that you get yours before they sell out!

Which one's your favourite from our selection of aviator jackets?
